Do You Have Nightmares or Flashbacks About Disturbing Incidents?
Post-traumatic stress disorder affects more than just combat veterans
Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) first came to light in helping war veterans after their experience in combat, it is now recognized as affecting others who have experienced trauma in other ways. For example, a person may have experienced a traumatic event such as a mugging, child abuse, rape or serious car accident; or someone close to them may have experienced a similar traumatic or life-threatening event. Furthermore, witnessing the death and destruction following a bombing or plane crash, or natural disaster such as flooding or earthquake, may prompt the disorder.
PTSD is one kind of anxiety disorder. Others include:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder
- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
- Panic Disorder
- Phobias
People with PTSD have persistent terrifying memories of their experience that may occur in nightmares or in “flashbacks” during the day. Anything that reminds them of the traumatic event may be very disturbing. As a result, anniversaries of the experience can be very difficult to cope with. The disorder can be debilitating to the point where the person has difficulty socializing or maintaining a job.
The psychiatrists and therapists of Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network treat PTSD and other anxiety disorders with proven therapies and medications. Our programs provide a safe haven where trauma can be understood, faced, and healed. If you or someone you love has symptoms of PTSD, find out how we can help by clicking on the services below.
